Short answer
Open-pit mines and quarries run four families of machines: excavators or loaders to load, rigid or articulated trucks to haul, crawler dozers to push and rip, and motor graders to maintain the roads. They are not chosen separately or by list price: they are chosen as a balanced fleet, by cost per tonne moved and by availability.
1. The four jobs in a mine and their machines
Every tonne goes through the same chain: it is broken or pushed, loaded, hauled, and travels on a road someone has to maintain. The most expensive machine in the chain is wasted if the next one keeps it waiting.
- Break and push: Crawler dozer with ripper
- Load: Excavator or wheel loader
- Haul: Rigid or articulated truck
- Maintain the road: Motor grader
- Measure: Telematics and fleet study
2. Loading: production excavators and loaders
The loading excavator sets the pace of the face. In the Komatsu catalog they run from the PC500LC-10M0 (49.4 t, 3.2 m³ bucket rated on 1.8 t/m³) to the PC600-8 (58.1 t, 3.5 m³), the PC800-8 (78.3 t, 4.5 m³ standard bucket and a 3.4 to 5.2 m³ range by material weight) and the PC1250-11R (118.3 t, 775 HP, 6.7 m³), configured as a backhoe or as a front shovel. For smaller quarries, the PC360-8M2 carries reinforced work equipment and the PC390LC-8M0 an oversized undercarriage and cyclonic pre-filter, against the two causes that most often stop an excavator in a quarry.
The wheel loader is the alternative when the face is flat and the material already broken: it moves between piles and the excavator does not. The WA470-8 (25 t, 5.0 m³) and WA500-6 (34.5 t, 6.1 m³) feed crushers and load mining trucks. Figures from Komatsu datasheets.

3. Hauling: the truck is sized by the excavator
The truck is not chosen by distance alone: it is chosen by the excavator that loads it. An excavator that fills the truck in a few passes keeps the cycle short; a small truck for a big excavator adds passes, cycles and fuel per tonne. That is why the PC800-8 and PC600-8 pair with the HD405-7 and HD465-7.
The HD465-7 carries 55 t in a 34.2 m³ body heaped 2:1, with 715 HP to hold speed on a loaded ramp; the HD405-7, 45 t at up to 70 km/h; the HD325-7, 36.5 t with a 24 m³ body, is the entry step into mine hauling.
- HD325-7 (rigid): 36.5 t
- HM400-3M0 (articulated): 40 t
- HD405-7 (rigid): 45 t
- HD465-7 (rigid): 55 t

4. Rigid or articulated truck
The rigid truck pays off on a built and maintained mine road: more payload per cycle and more speed. The articulated truck goes where the rigid one gets stuck: the articulation and 6x6 drive of the HM400-3M0 keep it loaded with 40 t on soft ground, in rain and on grades, which in Central America is the normal rainy-season case.
If your roads fall apart in the rain or change every week, start with the articulated truck or with the grader that maintains them; if they are stable, the rigid truck lowers the cost per tonne.
| Criterion | Rigid (HD) | Articulated (HM) |
|---|---|---|
| Road | Maintained mine road | Soft, rain, grades |
| Payload | 36.5 to 55 t | 40 t |
| Defined by | Payload and speed per cycle | Articulation and 6x6 drive |
| Models | HD325-7, HD405-7, HD465-7 | HM400-3M0 |
5. Dozing, ripping and roads
The crawler dozer breaks and piles material so the shovel loads without waiting. The D85EX-15 (27 t, 264 HP, 7.1 m³ Sigmadozer blade) pushes and rips in quarries; the D155AX-6 (39.5 t, 354 HP, 9.4 m³) carries a giant ripper for rock; the D275AX-5E0 (56 t, 410 HP) has a 13.7 m³ Semi-U blade and long-life final drives. The Sigmadozer blade rolls material toward the center instead of letting it escape at the sides.
The road is production too: a broken one slows the trucks and punishes tyres and suspensions. The GD705-5 motor grader (22.2 t, up to 250 HP, 20.5 R25 tyres) is the heavy class for mine roads.

6. Availability and cost per tonne: the fleet study
A cheaper machine that sits idle much of the time ends up costing more than one that works. The price is paid once; the operation is paid every hour for years: fuel, tyres, maintenance, wear parts and operator, divided by the tonnes the fleet moves.
The three typical mistakes are one machine too many (idle capital and trucks queuing), one too few (the crusher waits) and the wrong combination. The fleet study compares two to four alternatives against your real operation — material, routes, shifts and costs — and, if the operation is complex, Komatsu is asked for a computer simulation of the full cycle to see where queues form before you buy.
7. Telematics, warranty and service that sustain availability
KOMTRAX comes included at no cost for Komatsu customers, per Komatsu: location, real hours, fuel use, idling, abnormality codes and maintenance reminders. The WA470-8 carries KOMTRAX Plus, which adds payload and fuel per cycle. Smart Construction Fleet measures haul cycles, routes and payload even with other brands' trucks.
The Komatsu Warranty Pro extended warranty reaches up to 60 months or 12,000 hours and, per Komatsu, applies to the line's dozers, loaders, excavators, rigid and articulated trucks and motor graders; during coverage only genuine parts, lubricants and filters are used. Komatsu service contracts come in 5 levels, from monitoring with filter kits to full maintenance with oil analysis.

8. Where to buy mining machinery in Central America
Mines are usually far from the city, so first ask who reaches your operation: parts in the country, a workshop and technicians who serve on site. Grupo ConstruMarket is an authorized Komatsu dealer in El Salvador (Zaragoza, Antiguo Cuscatlán, San Miguel), Guatemala as CMARKET (Mixco, Río Hondo, Xela), Nicaragua (Managua) and Panama (Panama City), with service in the shop or on site and genuine parts with factory traceability.
The entire mining line in this guide is offered in all four countries. For bucket teeth, cutting edges and protection there is Komatsu GET in all four and Hensley in Nicaragua and Panama. Financing through credit or leasing, subject to approval.

Common mistakes
Buying on list price
What costs is the stopped hour and the expensive tonne, not the invoice.
A small truck for a big excavator
More passes, more cycles and more fuel per tonne.
One machine too many or too few
Too many: idle capital and queues. Too few: the crusher waits and the plan is missed.
Forgetting the road
Without a grader, a broken road cuts speed and destroys tyres.
Standard equipment in rock
In a quarry the structure suffers more than the engine: ask for reinforced equipment and severe-duty GET.
Frequently asked questions
What machinery is used in mining?
Production excavators and wheel loaders to load, rigid and articulated trucks to haul, crawler dozers to push and rip, and motor graders to maintain roads. Size depends on tonnage, material and haul distance.
Rigid or articulated mining truck?
Rigid on a built, stable mine road: more payload and speed, like the HD465-7 at 55 t. Articulated on soft ground, in rain or on grades: the HM400-3M0, with 6x6 drive, carries 40 t where the rigid truck gets stuck.
How many trucks does an excavator need?
It depends on the truck's cycle time (load, travel, dump and return) against the time the excavator takes to fill it. With too few trucks the excavator waits; with too many, trucks queue. The fleet study calculates it with your real routes.
How much does mining machinery cost?
It depends on the model, the configuration for your material, extended warranty, service contract and how you pay. In mining what you compare is the fleet's cost per tonne, not the price per machine. Request a fleet study or a quote; an advisor contacts you during business hours.
Where to buy mining machinery in Central America?
With the authorized Komatsu dealer in each country: ConstruMarket in El Salvador, Nicaragua and Panama, and CMARKET in Guatemala. Production excavators, loaders, HD and HM trucks, D dozers and motor graders are offered in all four countries.
What is KOMTRAX and how much does it cost?
It is Komatsu's remote monitoring: location, hours, fuel use, idling and maintenance alerts from a computer or phone. Per Komatsu, it comes included with the machine, with no subscription cost to the customer.
