How to choose a wheel loader and what drives its price

1. First: level ground and a short haul

A wheel loader is a bucket machine on four wheels that works on level ground and moves material short distances, typically from the stockpile to a truck parked nearby. Its tyres give it mobility and speed a tracked machine does not have, but that advantage is lost if the ground is broken or the distance grows.

If your working face is not level or the haul is long, a bigger loader does not fix it: changing the loading scheme does.

2. What you load sets the size

Count how many passes you need to fill your truck or hopper, with the real material. Fewer passes shorten the truck's wait; a bucket too big for the truck spills and forces adjustments. Also check the density the bucket is rated for: the WA200-6's 1.9 m³ bucket is designed for 1.6 t/m³ material, per Komatsu.

3. Dump height: does it reach the hopper?

Two measurements decide whether the loader reaches the hopper or the truck has to come closer: dump clearance and dump reach. The WA380-6 states 2,855 mm of dump clearance and 1,210 mm of reach; the compact WA150-5, 2,710 mm of dump height (Komatsu datasheets). Measure them against your truck's side rail or your hopper mouth before choosing.

If you load a silo or a high hopper, look for parallel lift: it keeps the bucket level as it rises and prevents spills. The WA250-6 has it, which is why it is chosen in agribusiness and aggregate plants.

4. Haul distance matters more than the bucket

In a load-and-carry operation, the distance the loader travels has a major influence on cost. As a working reference, the 'V' loading cycle measures around two and a half tyre turns, and load-and-carry is efficient between 50 and 150 metres.

Beyond that, the answer is almost never a bigger loader: it is bringing the truck closer, moving the stockpile or adding dedicated hauling. When distance governs, a machine with more travel speed and lower operating cost beats one with more bucket.

5. Transmission and power for your cycle

The WA150-5's hydrostatic drive responds to the pedal: it is what you need when the cycle is a few metres long with lots of starting and stopping. The WA200-6 is hydrostatic too, with 4 speed ranges, for yard work and short hauls with travel speed. The WA250-6 combines hydrostatic and mechanical drive, with automatic traction control.

Between two machines of similar weight, the cycle decides. The WA430-6 weighs almost the same as the WA380-6 (18.6 vs 17.6 t) but has 231 HP vs 191: it pays off when the cycle includes a short haul; if the loader does not travel, the WA380-6 burns less for the same work.

6. Three configurations: severe, general and multipurpose

Severe means loading blasted rock in a quarry or mine: tyres from the toughest range, sidewall guards, a reinforced-edge bucket with a spill guard, and teeth for extreme applications. General means loose material and repetitive cycles: standard tyres and a straight-lip bucket with cutting edges, which keeps the floor level. Multipurpose means a tool carrier: forks and other attachments with parallel lift, plus extra hydraulics and a quick coupler ordered from the factory.

Light material also changes the bucket: the WA320-6 takes a 5.0 m³ bucket for sugarcane bagasse, besides the 2.6 m³ one for aggregates, so it works the sugar mill in harvest season and the quarry the rest of the year.

7. What drives the price of a wheel loader?

We do not publish heavy equipment prices because two loaders of the same model can be quoted very differently. This is what moves the number:

• Class and size: weight, power and bucket.
• Configuration: tyres, guarding, bucket type and teeth for the application.
• Factory options: extra hydraulics and quick coupler, depending on the model.
• Backing: Komatsu Warranty Pro extended warranty and Komatsu service contracts in 5 levels; exact coverage by model is confirmed when quoting.
• New, used or rental: used machines are inspected and sold as is.
• Payment: cash, or credit or leasing subject to approval.

8. Where to buy a wheel loader in Guatemala and Central America

9. Care for it every day: Komatsu's routine on video

Komatsu publishes on video the daily routine it asks of this machine's operators. Caring for it this way is what prevents unwanted stoppages and what backs up the warranty. What's specific to this machine:

• Before the shift: look for leaks, drain water from the fuel tank and the pre-filter bowl, and check the air filter indicator.
• Engine oil, hydraulic system, coolant, fuel and transmission oil levels.
• Check bucket wear and grease every joint, including the center articulation and the rear differential pivot.
• Warm up the engine for 5 minutes and drive the loader another 5 minutes without load before pushing it.
• At the end, reverse the fan to clean the coolers, with the cab doors closed, and leave it 5 minutes at idle before shutting down.
