Short answer
KOMTRAX is Komatsu's remote monitoring system: the machine sends its location, working hours, fuel consumption, alerts and maintenance reminders, and you see them on your computer, phone or tablet. According to Komatsu, it is for its customers only and free of charge. It tells you where each unit is, how much it really works and when service is due, before a failure stops it.
KOMTRAX in one sentence
It's Komatsu's factory telematics: a terminal on the machine records how it works and transmits it so the owner, fleet manager and workshop see the same data without going to the site. It doesn't replace the operator or the mechanic; it gives them information to decide in time.
Komatsu states there are more than 1,000 machines connected to KOMTRAX in Central America. In the catalog, the datasheets of the WB93R-5E0 and WB97R-5E0 backhoes, for example, list KOMTRAX as the built-in telematics system.

What data it shows you
According to Komatsu's materials, KOMTRAX groups the information into four blocks. What's useful isn't a single figure but comparing it across weeks, machines and operators.
- Location and security: GPS with geofences, unusual-movement alerts and equipment lockout at night, by calendar or forced.
- Fuel and hours: actual and per-hour average consumption, remaining level, real working hours, idle time and hours per operating mode (economy, power, breaker, lifting).
- Maintenance: automatic reminders, six-digit abnormality codes and a cautions dashboard to anticipate failures.
- Reports: Dashboard App with customizable alerts and subscription PDF reports, plus Komatsu Business Application (KBA) with operator identification.
How the data gets from the machine to your phone
The new KOMTRAX generation (NGK, in Komatsu's naming) communicates over 4G cellular, with a satellite option for areas without coverage, and adds the KICSi terminal. The interface uses Google maps and access is through Microsoft single sign-on. For companies with their own fleet software, Komatsu offers an open API compatible with the ISO 15143-3 standard, so you can integrate the data into your systems.
- The machine records: Hours, fuel, location, alerts
- The terminal transmits: 4G cellular or satellite option
- You see it: Portal, Dashboard App or KOMTRAX Mobile
- You integrate it (optional): Open ISO 15143-3 API
What to do with the data: decisions that save money
KOMTRAX's value is in turning each data point into a concrete action. These are the most common ones in a construction fleet.
Idle time is the first finding in almost every fleet: hours with the engine running but no work, which burn fuel and add hours to the maintenance counter. Hours per mode show whether an excavator spends a lot of time in hammer (breaker) mode, which changes wear and the service plan. And real hours—not the ones on the daily report—are the right base to calculate each machine's cost per hour.
What is KOMTRAX telling you?
- A lot of idle time → Talk to the operator, shut down while waiting
- An abnormality code → Send it to after-sales before continuing
- Hour-based service coming up → Schedule the maintenance
- Movement after hours → Check geofence and lockout
- Many hours in hammer mode → Adjust the service plan
KOMTRAX and your fleet maintenance
Automatic reminders and abnormality codes let you reach the workshop with the diagnosis already started: the technician knows what to check before seeing the machine. That shortens downtime.
Komatsu service contracts are organized in 5 cumulative levels; Level 1 includes KOMTRAX monitoring and filter kits up to 1,000 hours. And if you have the Komatsu Warranty Pro extended warranty, the hours and alerts history helps you meet the maintenance the coverage requires, with genuine parts, lubricants and filters.

KOMTRAX when buying or selling a used Komatsu
The hour meter says how many hours the machine has; KOMTRAX says how they were used. If you're buying a used Komatsu, ask for the history: real hours, usage pattern, alerts and maintenance. A machine with many hours and up-to-date service is often better than one with few hours and unattended alerts. If you're selling or trading in yours, that organized history is your best argument.
KOMTRAX isn't Smart Construction
They're often confused. KOMTRAX monitors the machine: where it is, how much it works, what alerts it has. Smart Construction is Komatsu's digital jobsite: drone survey, digital twin of the terrain, 3D machine guidance and control, and haul measurement. A fleet can have KOMTRAX without Smart Construction; Smart Construction is designed per project, starting with a technical visit.

How to activate it and who to ask for support
Grupo ConstruMarket represents Komatsu equipment, services and KOMTRAX technology in El Salvador, Guatemala (CMARKET), Nicaragua and Panama. To add users, set up alerts or geofences, or review an abnormality code, contact the Komatsu after-sales team in your country with the machine's model and serial number (on the data plate). The PDF quick-start guide and the links to the portal, the Dashboard and KOMTRAX Mobile are on the Komatsu after-sales page.
Summary: what to choose
| If… | Then… |
|---|---|
| You want to know where each machine is | GPS location and geofences |
| You suspect high fuel use | Compare fuel per hour and idle time |
| You want to anticipate failures | Cautions dashboard and abnormality codes |
| You have your own fleet software | Open ISO 15143-3 API |
| You're buying a used Komatsu | Ask for the KOMTRAX history |
| You need 3D guidance or to measure the site | That's Smart Construction |

Which country is your project in?
Common mistakes
Having it and not looking at it
Alerts only help if someone reviews them; assign a weekly owner.
Ignoring idle time
Engine hours without work raise fuel use and bring services forward.
Sharing a single user
With individual users everyone gets their alerts and actions are traceable.
Not setting geofences
Without them you won't know if a machine leaves the site after hours.
Taking the machine in without the code
The abnormality code speeds up diagnosis and shortens downtime.
Frequently asked questions
Does KOMTRAX cost anything?
According to Komatsu, KOMTRAX is for its customers only and free of charge. Some reports, like the Dashboard's PDF reports, are by subscription.
Which machines come with KOMTRAX?
It's Komatsu's factory telematics. In the catalog, datasheets like those of the WB93R-5E0 and WB97R-5E0 backhoes list it as built in. Confirm with the advisor the equipment of the model and serial you're interested in.
Can I see it on my phone?
Yes: through KOMTRAX Mobile, the Dashboard App or the portal in a browser, on computer, phone or tablet.
Does it work where there's no cell signal?
The new generation (NGK) communicates over 4G and, according to Komatsu, has a satellite option for areas without coverage. Ask which option applies to your machine.
Can I feed the data into my own system?
Yes. Komatsu offers an open API compatible with ISO 15143-3 on the NGK generation, designed to integrate telematics into fleet software or an ERP.
Are KOMTRAX and Smart Construction the same?
No. KOMTRAX monitors each machine; Smart Construction digitizes the jobsite (drone, digital twin, 3D guidance and haul measurement).
