How often: the manual sets the interval
There's no universal number. Each manufacturer publishes the maintenance schedule for each model, and that's the one that rules. Bobcat, for example, packs maintenance into kits by service hours—250, 500, 1,000/1,500 and 3,000 hours depending on the machine family—with each interval's filters and parts. Komatsu includes genuine filter kits by the hour in its service contracts.
The manual's interval assumes normal conditions. On very dusty sites, in heat or with fuel of doubtful quality, check more often and don't stretch the changes. Air filter: wear comes in through the intake
According to Komatsu, 85% of system failures are caused by contaminants such as dust. Dust that gets past the air filter acts like sandpaper inside the engine: it wears cylinders and rings, and the result is lost power, black smoke and rising oil consumption.
The most common causes aren't the filter itself but how it's handled: banging it clean or using excessive air pressure tears the paper, a loose nut or worn seal lets unfiltered air through, and imitation elements tend to fail right at the seal. Check the restriction indicator daily on dusty sites and replace the element when it says so, not when it looks dirty.
Oil, fuel and hydraulic filters
Engine oil filter: when it saturates, the oil stops cleaning and lubricating. The signs are low oil pressure, new noises, blue smoke and the warning light. Keep working and the damage escalates: scored valves, pistons and liners, bearings, turbo and, at worst, the crankshaft.
Fuel filter: the pump and injectors work to minimal tolerances, and one particle or drop of water is enough to score or clog them. It shows as hard starting, poor acceleration, lack of power and rising consumption. Drain water from the separator as often as the manual says and watch how fuel is stored on site.
Hydraulic filter: the system works at high pressure with very fine valves. A clogged filter lets particles circulate through valves and cylinders. That's why it's changed by the hour, before it saturates, not when the machine already feels slow or runs hot.

Genuine filters and warranty
A genuine filter uses media designed for that machine's pressure and flow, with seals made to fit; an imitation can look identical and let through exactly the particles that do the damage.
The warranty also depends on it. Komatsu Warranty Pro extends coverage up to 60 months or 12,000 hours, and according to Komatsu, throughout the coverage the machine runs only on genuine parts, lubricants and filters. Bobcat states that using genuine parts protects the machine's warranty. Before switching filter brands, check what your warranty says.
Cutting edges and end bits: flip them in time
On a dozer blade, symmetric cutting edges are flipped to use the other edge, which practically doubles their service life. The key is flipping them before wear reaches the manufacturer's limit: let it pass and wear reaches the blade, and the repair is no longer an edge, it's the moldboard. Check the bolts: a loose edge wears unevenly and breaks hardware.
On loaders, the bucket lip is protected with bolt-on edges, shrouds and wear bars: they're changed on site and protect the expensive part, the base bucket.
Teeth and tips: the right type for each ground
There's no single tooth for everything. Penetration teeth keep a sharp tip and perform in compact soil or fractured rock; abrasion teeth carry more material and last in sand, gravel or caliche; rock teeth combine hardness and impact resistance. The wrong type costs you in productivity or in parts that wear out in weeks.
