Road construction

What is road infrastructure (vialidad) and what machinery does a road job need?

Short answer

Road infrastructure (in Spanish, vialidad) is the set of routes where vehicles and people travel—highways, rural roads, streets, bridges and their drainage—and all the work of planning, building, maintaining and operating them. Road work can be new construction, rehabilitation or maintenance, and each type needs different equipment: new work starts with earthmoving, rehabilitation with a cold planer or recycler, and road maintenance with a motor grader and a roller. In Spanish the word is also used for traffic and road safety; this guide covers the infrastructure.

What vialidad means, concretely

Road infrastructure is everything that makes travel possible: the road and its surroundings. It isn't just the asphalt: a road that doesn't drain water falls apart even with a good surface. That's why road work always includes earthmoving, drainage, pavement structure and signage.

In El Salvador, for example, new work is driven by the public works ministry and network upkeep has its own fund, FOVIAL. When someone says «vialidad» in a driving test, however, they mean traffic rules: same word, different meaning.

  • Roadway: the lanes vehicles drive on.
  • Shoulders: the side strip that protects the edge.
  • Ditches, culverts and box drains: they take water off the road.
  • Slopes: the side cuts and fills, which must be stabilized.
  • Pavement structure: subgrade, subbase, base and surface.
  • Bridges, curbs, sidewalks and signage.

Types of road: by function and by surface

By function, roads range from main highways between cities to secondary roads, rural or local roads and urban streets. By surface, from dirt or gravel, cobblestone or pavers, to asphalt (flexible pavement) and concrete (rigid pavement).

The combination decides the equipment. A gravel rural road is maintained with a motor grader and a soil roller; an asphalt street, with a saw, cold planer and asphalt roller; a concrete one, with cutting and pouring equipment. Before thinking about machines, define which road you'll work on and what surface it has.

Types of road work and what each one starts with

New work means opening or widening a road: it starts with clearing and earthworks. Rehabilitation means recovering a damaged road without building it from scratch: the structure is milled or recycled and repaved. Maintenance means keeping what already exists: reshaping roads, cleaning ditches, patching and replacing signage, several times a year. Urban work mixes all three in short stretches, with traffic and neighbors around.

If you're starting out: which equipment to buy or rent first

A municipality or contractor entering road work doesn't need a highway fleet. It needs the equipment for the work it will repeat all year, and rents the rest. The rule: buy what works every week; rent what you use on one project.

For most, that core is a motor grader, a roller and a backhoe loader, plus owned or hired dump trucks to haul material. With that you maintain roads, clean ditches and build drainage. The cold planer, paver or dozer come in when the contract calls for them.

Rural road maintenance: motor grader and roller

The typical job is reshaping the road, restoring its crown so water runs to the ditches, cleaning them and compacting. According to Komatsu's datasheet, the GD535-5 (15.1 t, 145 HP, 3.7 m blade) is the motor grader designed for municipalities and rural roads; the GD555-5 adds variable power and a 3.7 to 4.3 m blade for more output. The motor grader guide explains how to choose among the catalog's four.

The roller follows. The SIMAQ SQRD L71 (4.2 t, per its datasheet) is a ride-on roller for embankments and road work, in all four countries; for thicker lifts, BOMAG offers soil rollers like the BW 211 D-5 (10.6 t) in El Salvador and Guatemala. Material needs its moisture to compact: a water truck on the front saves passes.

Urban streets and patching: compact equipment

In the city the challenge is space and traffic. The pothole is cut straight with a saw like the SIMAQ SQ16 PRO, the damaged material removed, the base compacted with a plate and closed with mix and a small roller. For longer stretches, BOMAG (El Salvador and Guatemala) has street-sized equipment, per its datasheets: the BM 500/15-2 cold planer mills 500 mm wide and up to 210 mm deep; the BF 200 C-2 paver works from 1.1 to 2.0 m (up to 3.4 m with extensions) at under 6 t; and the BW 100 AD-5 tandem roller weighs 2,500 kg with a 1,000 mm width.

With open traffic, signage goes in from day one: SIMAQ cones, channelizer drums and delineator posts in all four countries.

Drainage and utilities: the backhoe loader

Water is the first cause of road damage, so culverts, box drains and ditches are part of road infrastructure, not an extra. The backhoe loader trenches, lays pipe, backfills and loads material with the same machine; according to its datasheet, the Komatsu WB97R-5E0 digs to 4,530 mm and is designed for road work and utility networks. If the drainage is deep or continuous, an excavator in the class of the Komatsu PC130-8 (11.7 t) fits urban streets and digs utility trenches, drains and channels.

New construction and large rehabilitation

When the contract is opening a highway or rehabilitating kilometers of road, the chain grows: earthworks with dozer, excavator and trucks; shaping with a motor grader; layer-by-layer compaction; in-place recycling and paving. That sequence, with each phase's equipment, is in the road-building equipment guide. If the contract demands tight tolerances, the motor grader and dozer can work with Komatsu Smart Construction 3D guidance.

Where to get road equipment in Central America

Grupo ConstruMarket is Komatsu's authorized distributor in El Salvador (Zaragoza, Antiguo Cuscatlán, San Miguel), Guatemala as CMARKET (Mixco, Río Hondo, Xela), Nicaragua (Managua) and Panama (Panama City): motor graders, backhoe loaders, excavators and dozers. BOMAG—rollers, cold planers and pavers—is offered in El Salvador and Guatemala; SIMAQ, with light compaction and signage, in all four countries. For public works, the group prepares datasheets and technical documentation for tenders, and RentaCentro rents group equipment for work peaks. Common mistakes

  • Thinking road work is just asphalt

Without drainage, the best surface is gone in one rainy season.

  • Buying a highway fleet

Buy what you use every week and rent what the project needs.

  • Reshaping without compacting

A reshaped, loose road falls apart with the first rain.

  • Compacting dry material

Without the right moisture it won't reach density; bring water to the front.

  • Patching without cutting

A patch without straight, firm edges opens up again.

Frequently asked questions

What is vialidad?

It's the set of routes where vehicles and people travel—highways, roads, streets, bridges and drainage—and the work of planning, building, maintaining and operating them. In everyday Spanish it's also used for traffic and road safety.

What does vialidad mean in El Salvador?

The same as in the rest of the region: the network of highways, roads and streets and its construction and upkeep. New work is driven by the public works ministry and network upkeep has its own fund, FOVIAL.

What machinery is used in road work?

It depends on the type of work: motor grader and roller to maintain roads; backhoe for drainage; saw, plate and small roller for patching; cold planer and paver to rehabilitate; dozer, excavator and trucks to open new roads.

What equipment does a municipality need for its roads?

The core is usually a motor grader, a roller and a backhoe, plus trucks for material. According to its datasheet, the Komatsu GD535-5 is the motor grader designed for rural and municipal roads.

How much does road equipment cost?

It depends on the model, configuration, payment method and whether you buy or rent. State the type of road, surface and workload in the quote to get a tailored proposal.
