Short answer
If it works indoors, in an enclosed warehouse or around food, choose electric: no exhaust or fumes. Within electric, lead-acid if you run one shift and charge overnight; lithium if you run several shifts and charge during breaks. If it works outdoors, in yards with ramps or long shifts with no time to charge, choose combustion: in the Hangcha catalog they come in diesel or LPG, not gasoline. And if the ground is dirt or gravel, no warehouse truck will do: you need a rough-terrain forklift.
First: where it will work and what air your people breathe
Choose the power source by the place before the price. A combustion engine, diesel or gas, emits exhaust; LPG burns cleaner than diesel, but it also produces carbon monoxide. That's why the catalog datasheets place electric trucks in enclosed warehouses, food and pharmaceutical plants and distribution centers, and combustion trucks in yards, jobsites and intensive outdoor work.
The line is no longer so rigid. According to Hangcha, the XC light-duty lithium electric has IPX4 water resistance for outdoor use, and the XA III series has a mast, axles and tires built for uneven outdoor ground. If your operation goes in and out of the warehouse all day, an outdoor-ready electric usually works better than bringing combustion indoors. For indoor combustion use, check your country's occupational safety regulations.

| Criterion | Lead-acid electric | Lithium electric | Diesel/LPG combustion |
|---|---|---|---|
| Where it fits | Indoors | In and out | Outdoor yard |
| Exhaust | No | No | Yes |
| Refueling | Full charge | Charge on breaks | Refuel |
| Shifts | One | Several | Several |
| Max Hangcha capacity | 16 t | 16 t | 12 t |
Diesel or LPG: the two sides of combustion
In the group's Hangcha catalog, almost every combustion series—A, A2, X, XF and XF2, from 1 to 12 t—comes in diesel or LPG and lifts up to 7,000 mm (the 1–3.8 t A series, up to 6,000 mm). From 5 t up there are two diesel-only series: the 5–10 t XA and the X for container work. No gasoline versions are listed.
The practical rule: diesel if the forklift lives in an open yard, moves heavy loads and you already handle diesel at your plant or site; LPG if it goes in and out of semi-covered, well-ventilated areas and you'd rather swap the cylinder and keep going, without handling liquid fuel. Either way refueling takes minutes, which is combustion's big advantage when there are no breaks to charge.

Electric: lead-acid or lithium, by your shifts
The conventional lead-acid electric—like the AE series, whose battery is removed from the rear according to Hangcha—makes sense when you run one shift and the truck rests overnight for a full charge. It needs a ventilated charging area and, if the battery isn't sealed, watering.
Lithium makes sense with two or three shifts, or when there's no long charging window: according to Hangcha, its 1.3–2 t A-series lithium truck charges fully in 2 hours and uses every break. For continuous heavy work there's high-voltage lithium (XH series, a 307 V platform with ultra-fast charging, per its datasheet). What each one costs to run is covered in the operating-cost guide.

Capacity and height: electric isn't just for light loads
It's an old myth. In the Hangcha catalog, electric trucks reach 16 t (12–16 t A series, lead-acid or lithium) and combustion trucks 12 t (8–12 t XF). In height, the 2.5–3.5 t A electric lifts up to 7,500 mm and the combustion trucks up to 7,000 mm. Don't fear ramps either: according to Hangcha, the 1–3.5 t X electric climbs a 20% grade at full load.
Choose with margin over your heaviest load, measured at the height of your top rack level, and check the model's load chart with the advisor: rated capacity drops when you lift higher or the load is longer.
- Lead-acid electric (A): 16 t
- Lithium electric (A): 16 t
- Diesel/LPG combustion (XF): 12 t

Dirt or gravel floor? Then rough-terrain
A warehouse forklift, electric or combustion, is built for concrete or asphalt. In a dirt yard, farm, sawmill or block plant it gets stuck and takes a beating. That's where the rough-terrain truck goes: according to Hangcha, the 1.5–1.8 t 4×4 has 280 mm of ground clearance, selectable 2WD/4WD with differential lock and up to 25 km/h. There are 2.5–3.5 t versions in 4×2 and 4×4, and 5–10 t, all up to 6,000 mm.
Lithium has arrived here too: Hangcha has a 1.5–3.5 t high-voltage lithium rough-terrain truck that, per its datasheet, fully charges in about 1.5 h with super-fast charging.

Special cases: flammables, containers and long loads
Three situations change the answer. If there are gases, solvents, paint or combustible dust, a standard forklift is an ignition source: Hangcha has a 1–3.5 t explosion-proof model, up to 6,500 mm, designed for those atmospheres. If you load and unload inside containers, the 5–10 t diesel X series for container work has a low height and narrow body, according to Hangcha. And if you move pipes, profiles, posts or lumber, the 3–6 t side loader (diesel or LPG) makes better use of narrow aisles, per its datasheet.
How to decide in five questions
Answer in order: where it works, what floor it runs on, how many shifts, how much it lifts and how high, and whether anything flammable is nearby. With those five answers the advisor can propose the exact series; without them, any recommendation is a guess.
Where and how will it work?
- Indoors, one shift → Lead-acid electric
- In and out, several shifts → Lithium electric
- Open yard, no charging breaks → Diesel or LPG combustion
- Dirt or gravel floor → Rough-terrain
- Flammable gases or dust → Explosion-proof

Which country is your project in?
Common mistakes
Combustion in an enclosed warehouse
Diesel and LPG emit exhaust; indoors it builds up.
Lead-acid for three shifts
With no long charging window, the truck runs out of power mid-day.
Thinking electric means light loads only
In the Hangcha catalog electric reaches 16 t and climbs 20% ramps loaded.
Warehouse forklift on dirt
It gets stuck and damaged; unpaved ground calls for rough-terrain.
Quoting without the rack height
The mast and real capacity depend on the top level's height.
Frequently asked questions
Which is better, an electric or a combustion forklift?
It depends on the place and the shifts. Electric for indoor work and exhaust-free operation; diesel or LPG combustion for open yards and long shifts with no charging breaks. If the ground is dirt, rough-terrain.
Which is better, a diesel or an LPG forklift?
Diesel for open yards and heavy loads, especially if you already handle diesel; LPG for well-ventilated semi-covered areas and quick cylinder swaps. In the Hangcha catalog, most combustion series come in both versions.
Are there gasoline forklifts?
In the group's catalog, Hangcha combustion forklifts come in diesel or LPG; no gasoline versions are listed. If you use a gasoline truck today, the advisor will propose the diesel, LPG or electric equivalent.
Can an electric forklift work outdoors or in the rain?
Some can. According to Hangcha, the XC light-duty lithium electric has IPX4 water resistance for outdoor use and the XA III series is built for uneven outdoor ground. Confirm the protection rating of the model you want with the advisor.
