Short answer
A forklift lifts and stacks pallets several meters high on firm floors, precisely and many times a day: it's a warehouse and yard machine. A skid steer loads, pushes, digs and cleans on dirt or gravel, and switches attachments in minutes: it's a jobsite machine. If you move and stack pallets, forklift; if you move bulk material and do varied tasks, skid steer; if you need height and rough ground at once, telehandler.
The difference in one sentence
A forklift has forks on a mast, a counterweight at the back and rear-wheel steering to turn tightly in aisles; its job is handling packaged loads. A skid steer has two lift arms at the front and a coupler for a bucket, forks, breaker, broom or auger; it turns on its own axis and its job is moving material on site.
They get mixed up because both «lift things», but choosing wrong is expensive: a skid steer can't safely stack at five meters, and a warehouse forklift doesn't work on loose dirt.

When a forklift
Warehouses, distribution centers, material yards and factories: when the job is receiving, putting away and dispatching pallets all day, and stacking them in racks. According to Hangcha's datasheets in the catalog, the 1–3.8 t A-series combustion forklift lifts up to 6,000 mm and the 1–3.5 t A-series lithium electric, up to 6,500 mm.
Hangcha, in all four countries, has versions for each environment:
- Electric (lead-acid or lithium): enclosed warehouses, food and shifts with battery charging; no fumes.
- Combustion (diesel or LPG): outdoor yards, ramps and long shifts without charging stops.
- Rough-terrain 4×2 or 4×4: dirt yards, sites, farms and sawmills.
- Reach and narrow-aisle trucks: tall racks with little space.
- Explosion-proof: areas with flammable gases or dust.
When a skid steer
Construction, site development, maintenance, farming and cleanup: when you need to load dirt or gravel, grade, clear debris, dig trenches or holes and move material in tight spaces. Its strength is switching attachments: bucket, forks, breaker, broom, auger, trencher.
In El Salvador and Panama the group offers Bobcat; the S570, for example, lifts 944 kg with 3,070 mm to the hinge pin according to Bobcat. In Guatemala and Nicaragua, the Komatsu SK820-5E0, with 900 kg rated capacity according to Komatsu. With forks they move the occasional pallet in a yard, but they don't replace a forklift in a warehouse.
Height and capacity: what the datasheets say
Working height marks the boundary. A skid steer dumps at about 3 m; a forklift stacks at 6 m or more; a telehandler reaches much higher and forward.
Watch the forklift's capacity: the rated figure is measured at a given height and load center. Lift higher or carry a longer load and real capacity drops. Check the model's load chart with the advisor before deciding.

What if the yard is dirt? Rough-terrain forklift
Some operations move pallets but have no concrete floor: block plants, sawmills, farms, site yards. There a warehouse forklift gets stuck and a skid steer stacks low. The answer is the rough-terrain forklift, with traction tires and more ground clearance.
Hangcha has 4×2 and 4×4 versions; the 2.5–3.5 t 4×4 lifts up to 6,000 mm according to its datasheet. It's the choice when the job is a forklift's and the ground is a site's.
The third option: telehandler
If on site you need to lift material onto a slab or a second level and also carry it over rough ground, neither one reaches: that's where the telehandler comes in. It combines site traction with a boom that reaches high and forward.
Bobcat, in El Salvador and Panama, has the TL35.70: 3,500 kg and 7.0 m according to its datasheet. Hangcha, in all four countries, has X-series diesel telehandlers of 4 t up to 17,700 mm and XH-series lithium units of 2.5–3.5 t up to 9,800 mm.
How to decide in three questions
Answer where it works, what it moves and how high. If the answers are mixed, many operations end up with two machines: the forklift in the warehouse and the skid steer in the yard. And if you only move pallets at floor level, a pallet truck or a stacker may be enough.
