Short answer
Mini excavator if the job is digging in a tight space—a yard, indoors, against a wall—and the machine stays on one site. Backhoe loader if, on the same day, you have to trench, backfill, load a truck and drive to another front on the street. Depth hardly decides it: from the 5 t class up, a Bobcat mini digs as deep as a Komatsu backhoe; what decides is everything else the machine has to do.
Two machines that look alike and work differently
The mini excavator is a scaled-down tracked excavator: the cab and arm swing 360° on the undercarriage, so it digs, swings and dumps the spoil on any side without moving. It does one thing—digging—and does it where no other machine fits.
The backhoe loader is a wheeled front loader with a digging arm at the back. It digs at the rear resting on outriggers, loads at the front with a large bucket and drives itself. It does two jobs with one machine and one operator, but it needs more room to maneuver and its arm works in an arc behind the machine, not in a full swing.

| Criterion | Mini excavator | Backhoe loader |
|---|---|---|
| Swing | Full 360° | Arm in a rear arc |
| Truck loading | Not its job | Front bucket 1.03–1.1 m³ |
| Depth (catalog) | 1,820–4,600 mm | 4,345–4,530 mm |
| Operating weight | 1.2–8.3 t | 7.5–8.3 t |
| Travel | On a trailer or lowboy | Drives itself, 4x4 tires |
| Countries | El Salvador and Panama | All four |
1. Space: where each one fits
If the job is inside a building, in an enclosed yard or against a wall, the backhoe is ruled out before talking about output: it's a long machine, with equipment at each end, that needs to set its outriggers and reposition for every stretch.
There the mini has no competition. The Bobcat E10 weighs 1,176 kg and, at 710 mm transport width, fits through a standard door, according to Bobcat. The E20, the E50 and the z series (E20z, E27z, E35z, E50z, E55z) have zero tail swing or zero house swing: they rotate fully without the rear leaving the track width, so they dig next to the wall without hitting it.

2. A 360° swing or loading plus digging
The mini's advantage is the swing: it digs, rotates and leaves the soil beside the trench in one motion, and with the front blade it pushes that material back to backfill. In continuous trenching that's rhythm.
The backhoe's advantage is the front bucket. With 1.03 m³ on the WB93R-5E0 and 1.1 m³ on the WB97R-5E0, according to Komatsu, it loads a truck, moves loose material and cleans up the front; a mini isn't built for that, because its bucket is small and loading with it is slow. Rule: if your day includes loading trucks or moving piles of material, the backhoe; if it's digging and backfilling on the same spot, the mini.
3. Moving between sites: tires or tracks
The backhoe runs on tires with standard 4x4 drive and drives itself from one front to the next, where your country's traffic rules allow it (check with the local authority). For a utility crew opening several trenches on different streets the same day, that matters more than any digging figure.
The mini runs on tracks: it doesn't sink in soft ground, but to change sites you have to load it on a trailer or lowboy and have something to tow it. A small mini like the Bobcat E26, at 2,625 kg, moves on a trailer; make sure your vehicle and trailer are rated for that weight. If you want a 360° swing and to drive on the street, there's the Bobcat E55W wheeled mini: 30 km/h travel speed and 3,495 mm digging depth, according to Bobcat.

4. Depth: a large mini catches up with the backhoe
Many people choose the backhoe «because it digs deeper». With catalog data, that's only true against small minis. The E20 reaches 2,600 mm and the E26 3,000 mm; the E55 already goes down 4,100 mm, and the E80—at 8,260 kg, the same weight as a WB97R—reaches 4,600 mm, slightly more than the backhoe's 4,530 mm.
Practical conclusion: measure the deepest trench you'll repeat (pipe invert plus bedding) and use that number to rule out the machines that don't reach it with margin. Among those left, decide by space, loading and travel.
- Bobcat E20 (mini): 2,600 mm
- Bobcat E26 (mini): 3,000 mm
- Bobcat E50z (mini): 3,553 mm
- Bobcat E55 (mini): 4,100 mm
- Komatsu WB93R-5E0 (backhoe): 4,345 mm
- Komatsu WB97R-5E0 (backhoe): 4,530 mm
- Bobcat E80 (mini): 4,600 mm

5. One machine or two?
That's usually the real question. A backhoe replaces two part-time machines—one that digs and one that loads—with a single operator and a single trip. If each task on its own doesn't fill a workday, the backhoe is the simplest math.
When both tasks fill the day, two specialized machines produce more: a mini that digs nonstop and a skid steer that loads, cleans up and backfills, each with its operator. In El Salvador and Panama both are Bobcat, with the same after-sales support. Run the numbers with your quantities: meters of trench per day, cubic meters to load and how many fronts you visit.
What does your job do most of the day?
- Dig in tight spaces or next to walls → Mini excavator
- Trench, backfill and load at several fronts → Backhoe loader
- Dig and load, each all day long → Mini plus skid steer
- A project of a few weeks → Rent

This video from the group's channel shows a backhoe loader switching between digging and loading: exactly the combined work where a mini doesn't compete.
6. Where to buy or rent each one
Grupo ConstruMarket is Komatsu's authorized distributor in El Salvador, Guatemala (as CMARKET), Nicaragua and Panama: the WB93R-5E0 and WB97R-5E0 backhoes are available in all four countries. Bobcat mini excavators, from the E10 to the E80, are offered only in El Salvador and Panama. In Guatemala and Nicaragua the catalog has no mini excavators: the options are the backhoe or, if you need a tracked excavator, the Komatsu PC130-8 (11.7 t and 5,520 mm digging depth, according to Komatsu).
For a short project, RentaCentro—a group company—has the WB93R and the Bobcat E50z in its fleet; confirm availability in your country. The purchase price isn't public: it depends on model, configuration, attachments and payment method, and backhoes and Bobcat equipment qualify for financing through credit or leasing, subject to approval.
- El Salvador: Zaragoza (headquarters with workshop), Antiguo Cuscatlán and San Miguel — Komatsu and Bobcat.
- Guatemala (CMARKET): Mixco, Río Hondo and Xela — Komatsu.
- Nicaragua: Managua — Komatsu. Panama: Panama City — Komatsu and Bobcat.

Which country is your project in?
Common mistakes
Choosing the backhoe for depth alone
A 5–8 t mini digs as deep or deeper; the difference is in loading and travel.
Putting a backhoe where it doesn't fit
Without room for outriggers and maneuvering, every stretch slows down and walls and floors get damaged.
Loading trucks with the mini
Its bucket is small: the truck waits and the mini stops digging.
Forgetting how the mini moves
It needs a trailer or lowboy and a vehicle to tow it; add that to every site change.
Assuming Bobcat is in every country
Bobcat minis are offered in El Salvador and Panama; in Guatemala and Nicaragua, Komatsu.
Frequently asked questions
Which is better, a mini excavator or a backhoe loader?
Neither is better at everything. The mini wins in tight spaces and continuous digging with a 360° swing; the backhoe wins when the same machine has to dig, load trucks and drive on the street between fronts.
Can a mini excavator load trucks?
It can, but slowly: its bucket is small and it isn't built for that. If loading is a big part of the day, use the backhoe, which loads with a 1.03 to 1.1 m³ front bucket according to Komatsu, or add a skid steer.
Which one digs deeper?
It depends on size. The catalog backhoes reach 4,345 and 4,530 mm; Bobcat minis go from 1,820 mm (E10) to 4,600 mm (E80). Compare against the deepest trench on your drawing.
Where can I get a mini excavator in Guatemala or Nicaragua?
In the group's catalog, Bobcat mini excavators are offered in El Salvador and Panama. In Guatemala (CMARKET) and Nicaragua the alternative is the Komatsu backhoe loader or the Komatsu PC130-8 excavator, the smallest tracked unit in the Komatsu catalog.
Can I rent them?
Yes. RentaCentro, a group company, has the Komatsu WB93R backhoe and the Bobcat E50z mini excavator in its fleet. Confirm availability in your country.
How much does a mini excavator or a backhoe loader cost?
There's no single price: it depends on model, configuration, attachments and payment method. Request a quote with your job and country, and an advisor will contact you during business hours.
